For nearly all of human history, securing enough food was a relentless struggle. Our physiology adapted masterfully to this reality, developing powerful urges to consume high-calorie foods and efficient systems to store excess energy as fat. These traits were lifesavers, allowing our ancestors to weather famines and endure harsh climates. Early observers documented hunters gorging on staggering quantities of meat when available—a sensible strategy in an unpredictable world. Today, that same biological imperative, confronted with endless buffets and processed foods, drives obesity epidemics. The struggle is compounded by our own metabolism; losing weight triggers hormonal signals that ramp up hunger and conserve energy, a stubborn echo of a famine that never comes. Our bodies, programmed for survival, fight relentlessly against our attempts to slim down.

This principle of “too much of a good thing” extends to other fundamentals. Consider water and sodium. In arid ancestral environments, losing both through sweat could be fatal, as the legendary run of Pheidippides from Marathon to Athens tragically illustrates. Our bodies evolved sophisticated mechanisms to hoard these precious resources. Now, in an age of salty snacks and preserved foods, that same conservation system contributes to widespread high blood pressure as it struggles to manage an excessive sodium load. A mechanism designed to prevent death from dehydration now contributes to a leading cause of heart disease and stroke.

Our mental wiring is similarly outdated. In a prehistoric world rife with predators and conflict, a hair-trigger stress response was advantageous. The individual who panicked quickly at a rustle in the bushes lived to pass on their genes. Today, that innate tendency to perceive threat is activated not by sabre-toothed cats, but by overflowing inboxes, financial pressures, and a relentless news cycle. The physiological state of panic—once a short-term survival boost—becomes a chronic condition, fueling pervasive anxiety and depression. Our minds are trapped in a perpetual state of high alert, misinterpreting modern hassles as existential dangers.

Even our life-saving blood, so adept at clotting to seal wounds and prevent fatal bleeding, turns against us. This trait, which saved countless lives from injuries and childbirth, now interacts catastrophically with the arterial damage caused by poor diets. Platelets swarm cholesterol plaques in artery walls, forming clots that can block blood flow to the heart or brain. A system that protected us from external trauma now precipitates internal crises like heart attacks and strokes.

Given the speed of these environmental changes, can our genes evolve us out of this predicament? The answer is likely no. Natural selection works slowly, over millennia, and requires that disadvantageous traits impede reproduction. Many chronic diseases like heart disease or type 2 diabetes often manifest later in life, after childbearing years. Furthermore, with a global population in the billions, the chance of a beneficial mutation spreading universally is vanishingly small. While our behaviors can influence our children’s health, we cannot rely on biological evolution to rescue us from problems created in a mere few centuries.

Therefore, the solution must be cultural and collective. Relying solely on individual willpower to resist deep-seated biological drives is a losing battle against millions of years of evolution. Meaningful change requires societal shifts: policies that make healthy foods more accessible and affordable, urban designs that encourage walking, and public health initiatives that address root causes. The book points to examples like Japan’s mandatory waistline measurements, a national effort to combat metabolic syndrome. Simultaneously, high-tech medical research, often driven by pharmaceutical companies, offers another front, developing drugs and treatments to manage the symptoms of this mismatch. The path forward lies in acknowledging that our bodies are not flawed, but simply out of sync. Our task is to reshape our world—through community action, intelligent policy, and scientific innovation—to better suit the ancient, magnificent bodies we inhabit.
