This cognitive mapping helps us navigate, but it replaces accurate detail with a cleaner, more schematic—and false—model. In retelling a friend’s mishap, we might omit the improbable discovery of an oyster in a river to preserve the story’s credibility, unknowingly editing reality into a more palatable fiction.
Our drive for efficiency leads us to seek patterns everywhere. A skilled interpreter doesn’t wait for a sentence to end; they recognize opening phrases and predict the rest. A musician reads the first notes of a familiar scale and their fingers know the path. We read by scanning word shapes and sentence beginnings, not letter-by-letter. This pattern recognition is the foundation of expertise, but it creates blind spots.
